Rotherham United v Bournemouth - Warne demands ruthlessness

PAUL WARNE feels his Rotherham United side need to find a ruthless edge and he wants the Millers to improve their goal-scoring return from set pieces.

Of Rotherham’s 12 league goals this term, only three have come from a set piece – excluding penalties – and it is an area the Millers chief is keen to develop.

United welcome AFC Bournemouth to the New York Stadium today, aiming to end a run of consecutive defeats.

The Millers have averaged less than one goal a game so far this term and a more clinical edge will undoubtedly help them find some consistency.

Bournemouth head into the contest on the back of three-straight wins and have not had troubling finding the net in recent outings, scoring nine times in their last three games.

“We need to get much, much better on set-pieces. I don’t think our set pieces have been up to standard this year,” admitted Warne.

“For a good set piece; you need a good delivery, a good run, a good distraction and good contact.

“More often than not we have three out of four of those. At this level, if everything isn’t perfect then you don’t stand a chance.

“We definitely need to work on that.

“We need to take more chances. The other night we had a few half-chances and if we are going to win more games they are the ones we need to take.

“In fairness, the lads aren’t missing on purpose but if we could be just a little bit more ruthless it would help our scorelines considerably.”

Warne has had no issue with Rotherham’s attitude this term and feels his side possesses a never-say-die mantra which gives him plenty of encouragement going forward.

“They never give up, our resilience is pretty good,” said Warne of his side who have scored 33 per cent of their league goals in the final 10 minutes of matches this season.

“Even when we get outplayed the lads keep going and believe they can get something from the game.

“I have been happy with the reaction to criticism.

“There are things you always need to improve on, even teams at the top.”
