Referees involved in Leeds United and Rotherham United controversies set for Premier League work

The referees involved in controversies in Leeds United and Rotherham United games earlier this week are set to work on Premier League games this weekend.

Leeds were denied a penalty against Sunderland in midweek, despite Black Cats midfielder Luke O’Nien handling inside the box. The decision was made more difficult to stomach by Leeds’ failure to make a breakthrough in the 0-0 draw.

The referee at the centre of the controversy, Tim Robinson, is set to officiate Newcastle United’s lunchtime clash with Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow (April 13). It will be the fourth time Robinson has taken charge of a Newcastle game this season.

Rotherham also felt hard done by in midweek, when Millers defender Lee Peltier was judged to have handled the ball inside the area despite being outside it. West Bromwich Albion were awarded a penalty, which John Swift dispatched to wrap up a 2-0 win.

Millers boss Leam Richardson was left bewildered by the decision and insisted he had no interest in an apology. Speaking after the game, he said: "It was a wrong decision, and a poor one in my opinion. It changed the full outcome of the game. The first goal we gave away was poor, but then I thought the second one changed the whole complex.

“We’ve had a number of similar decisions and apology letters, but I have no interest in that. You can’t get those decisions wrong.”

Geoff Eltringham was the man in the middle who made the call and he is also set for Premier League action this weekend. He has been listed as the fourth official for Burnley’s meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion.
