Reading 5 Sheffield Wednesday 0: Owls defeat 'unacceptable' blasts Irvine

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY boss Alan Irvine blamed a lack of mental strength for his side's display as they were thumped by fellow strugglers Reading.

After a decent start to his Owls career, Irvine suddenly finds his side back in the relegation zone and facing a fight to keep their place in the Championship.

Irvine knows they will need to improve if they are to have any chance of achieving survival.

"That was unacceptable," he said. "We were a bit unlucky with the first goal but after that we caved in.

"If we are mentally fragile that will be a real problem. If you don't have mental strength then you are in real trouble. The time you really find out about people is in adversity.

"I am learning things as I go along but I don't want to judge people over too short a time. I am still trying to get to know the players and I wouldn't like to jump to conclusions too soon. This could be a huge moment in our season one way or another."
