Rampant Blues give Mourinho belief they will qualify

Manager Jose Mourinho is confident that Chelsea will qualify for the Champions League knockout stages after getting their campaign up and running with a 4-0 win at Steaua Bucharest.

Ramires scored twice with a Daniel Georgievski own goal and a late Frank Lampard strike sealing a win that could have been even more emphatic.

It meant Chelsea immediately bounced back from their shock 2-1 opening defeat to Basle at Stamford Bridge, which had created some early pressure.

But after a dominant display, when a knee injury to Fernando Torres was the only sour note, Mourinho is now certain his side will progress from Group E.

“I think we are going to qualify,” he said. “Today’s result is important because if we don’t win we are under pressure.

“We have to control the situation and make points against Schalke and then beat Basle and Steaua.

“From the first minute it was very good. From the first minute we kept control of game.

“We played good football with intelligence and maturity.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger reflected on a job well done after his side ran out convincing 2-0 winners over Napoli at the Emirates Stadium.

Club-record signing Mesut Ozil scored his first goal since a £43m deadline day switch and then turned provider to set up Olivier Giroud as Arsenal took control of Champions League Group F.

It was a 10th straight win in all competitions for Arsene Wenger’s side, who have stormed to the top of the Premier League and now look on course for safe passage through to the knockout stages of Europe’s elite club competition.

“The first half was outstanding,” said Wenger. “The second half we played with more maturity, less drive going forward and a bit more cautious. But it was an outstanding game.

The French boss was also full of praise for Ozil’s contribution, adding: He said: “The first half (he was) absolutely amazing, fantastic. “His skill, his finishing, it’s what you want to see in the stand when you come and watch football.”
