Proud Rotherham United boss Paul Warne on Cup exit at Everton

It looked like being a long afternoon for United when Cenk Tosun chipped in an opener, but the visitors produced an outstanding response to dominate much of the remainder of the game in normal time.

A first-ever career goal from Matt Olosunde equalised for Warne's side on 56 minutes with Everton - despite seeing a late goal from Tosun ruled out for offside - fortunate to take the game into the extra half-hour.

The hosts - who made a number of substitutions in the second period - prevailed thanks to a goal in the 93rd minute from Abdoulaye Doucoure, but it was a performance and day to give the Millers heart for their relegation fight in the Championship.

Warne, who was delighted with his side's display, but not particularly with the goals they conceded, said: "I was proud of the performance of everyone, the players and the staff and my coaches.

"I thought we were organised really well and in and out of possession, we caused them problems, so from that point of view, I could not be prouder."

On Olosunde's strike, he added: "In fairness, his dad texted me a few weeks ago and said: 'You need to tell Matt to score, you need to tell him what to do'. So I have been telling him to score and luckily he did.

"I thought he was excellent today. Once we grew into the game, I thought the three lads in midfield were very good and Dan (Barlaser) gave us a really good bit of composure on the ball and Smudge (Michael Smith) led the line really well.

"I thought Woody (Richard Wood) was very good and he played 120 minutes and my only frustration was the two goals.

"But apart from their first goal in the first half, I am not too sure if they had another attempt on goal (in 90 minutes). I am not trying to be rude, but don't remember it.

"We looked a really composed, well organised team trying to play for all their family, friends and wonderful town.

"I leave here full of pride, but frustration as well."
