These clubs finished fourth and fifth last season, both suffering play-off agony, but showed enough here to suggest they could be contenders again.

"I thought we had enough chances to have won it but then Morecambe had some, too," said Rotherham manager Ronnie Moore.

Le Fondre's effort, a 30-yarder which hit the bar, came at the start of the second half.

In this first Football League game at Morecambe's new 6,500-capacity Globe Arena, Rotherham had the better of the first half with Le Fondre going close and midfielder Danny Harrison bringing a fine save from Barry Roche, who also denied Kevin Ellison late on.

The home side had their moments. Adam Rundle, who was on loan with Rotherham for a month last season, put a chance wide and Chris McCready's header hit a post.

Phil Jevons put a chance over before Rotherham striker Tom Elliott headed fractionally wide.
