Hull were facing an uphill battle to record their first away win in the Barclays Premier League this season with Blackburn a goal and a man up at half-time at Ewood Park.

Rovers took the lead after 16 minutes when Martin Olsson's shot was deflected into the net by Tigers goalkeeper Boaz Myhill.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 men with George Boateng red-carded for a challenge on Morten Gamst Pedersen.

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce made three changes to his side.

Michel Salgado, El-Hadji Diouf and Keith Andrews all returned to the team following the defeat by Stoke.

Hull were looking to build on the victory against Manchester City and record their first away win in the league this season with manager Phil Brown naming an unchanged team.

Blackburn marked the death of supporter John Taylor at the weekend with a minute's silence. The players also wore black armbands.

Blackburn almost took the lead after six minutes when George Boateng was pulled up for a challenge on Nikola Kalinic.

Morten Gamst Pedersen delivered the free-kick and Ryan Nelsen got in a powerful header, only for Boaz Myhill to turn it over the top.

Hull responded and Stephen Hunt cleared the bar with his effort inside the area after being set up by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

Play switched back down the other end and Myhill did well to claw away a header from Diouf in the 12th minute.

It was an open game and a minute later Paul Robinson parried Vennegoor of Hesselink's shot after good work by Hunt.

Blackburn opened the scoring in the 16th minute after Diouf set Olsson scampering away down the left.

The full-back's shot from the byline took a deflection off Myhill and went into net to give Blackburn the start they were hoping for.

It was a test of character for Hull even at this early stage given their dreadful away record in the league.

Blackburn maintained the momentum and Olsson smacked a volley into Myhill's body in the 30th minute after a clearance from Steven Mouyokolo fell at his feet.

Olsson was giving Hull problems and headed wide four minutes later when a long throw from Morten Gamst Pedersen caused confusion in the visiting defence.

Then Nikola Kalinic failed to get a vital touch for Blackburn after Salgado's effort has been blocked.

Hull's troubles increased in the 39th minute when they were reduced to 10 men, Boateng red-carded after needing treatment following an aerial challenge on Pedersen in the middle of the park.

Now a goal down and a man down, Hull had it all to do to get back in the game as the snow began to fall.

Blackburn came close to extending their lead in the 43rd minute after an inswinging corner from Diouf. Nelsen was about to pounce at the back post but Myhill was able to touch the ball to safety.

Hull were looking shaky at the back every time the ball came into the area and they were facing an uphill task in the second half.
