The Tigers fully deserved to go through after outplaying Premier League opposition during normal time, only for Ezgjan Alioski's stoppage-time goal to rule out Mallik Wilks' opener.

It was a disappointing night from a Leeds side with 11 changes but an excellent one for a Hull side who have put the disappointment of relegation behind themselves immediately.

Here is how chief football writer Stuart Rayner assessed the players on both sides.

Leeds United

Kiko Casilla – some decent saves and even scored in the shoot-out but it is the lot of the goalkeeper that giving the ball away for the opening goal counts for more 7

Jamie Shackleton – given a difficult game out of position then denied in the shoot-out 5

Charlie Cresswell – Mallik Wilks was difficult to deal with, and he fluffed a chance at a first-half header. He will surely get better 5

Leif Davis – Wilks's goal deflected off him 5

Barry Douglas – stood up as a senior player 6

Oliver Casey – looked ill at ease trying to protect a harassed back four. Withdrawn at half-time 5

Ian Poveda – Leeds's best player with a couple of surging runs at the start of the second half 7

Mateusz Bogusz – substituted in the second half 5

Tyler Roberts – did not really make an impact 5

Ezgjan Alioski – a stoppage-time equaliser either side of a bad miss and hitting the post in the shoot-out 6

Rodrigo – the minutes will have done him more favours than his team-mate did. Scored in the shoot-out but quiet in the 90 minutes 6
