The United right-back beat off the rival claims of five of the second-tier's stand out performers last term in Brentford duo Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma plus West Brom’s Matheus Pereira, Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic and QPR star Eberechi Eze.

Ayling missed the start of the campaign following ankle surgery last summer with the 28-year-old only making his first appearance of the season in the Championship clash at home to West Brom on October 1 as a second-half substitute.

In total, the former Bristol City player made 35 league starts and two more Championship outings from the bench in a season which saw him score four goals and provide four assists and end up with a Championship winners’ medal.

Ayling also scooped the club’s goal of the season award after a brilliant strike in the derby win over Huddersfield Town in March - in a campaign which saw Leeds secure the Championship title and return to the Premier League after a 15-year absence.
