Mowatt has been nominated for the prize just a week after missing out on the Championship’s player of the month award.

The teenager was included in a four-man shortlist for the more prestigious November accolade but lost out to Brentford striker Andre Gray.

The Football League, however, has acknowledged his impact on United’s results in November by awarding him a trophy which in previous years was won by Victor Moses, Wilfried Zaha and Will Hughes.

Mowatt scored three league goals last month and also recorded two assists, and his form earned him a call-up to the England Under-20 squad

Mowatt, 19, said: “It’s a good feeling when you win things like this. You feel rewarded for how you’ve been playing and the things you’ve been doing.

“I didn’t know anything about it. I knew I was up for Championship player of the month but I didn’t get that. I wasn’t expecting this.

“I’ve been playing well these last couple of months and adding goals. Last season I’d play well but I wouldn’t be scoring or creating goals. This year I think I’ve added those things to my game. That’s the most pleasing thing for me.

“I want to score more goals and I was disappointed that I only got one last season. I thought I should have scored more. I want to be one of those creative midfielders who chips in with the goals as well.”

Mowatt, who made his senior debut for Leeds as an 18-year-old in 2013, has held down a regular place in United’s starting line-up since the sacking of former head coach David Hockaday in August.

Current boss Neil Redfearn said: “The scope of what’s in front of him is immeasurable. He has the world at his feet and he’s an outstanding young player.”
