Howson offered extended contract by Leeds

LEEDS United have offered captain Jonathan Howson a new contract in a bid to keep him at Elland Road for the rest of the season and beyond.

Howson’s representatives have yet to respond to the offer, it is understood.

Midfielder Howson, an England under-21 international, is in the last year of his current contract and could become a free agent when he reaches his 24th birthday in May.

He has appeared more than 200 times for Leeds since emerging from their academy in 2006.

Chief executive Shaun Harvey said: “Discussions have been ongoing for a period of time and since the transfer window shut. We’ve made an offer to Jonny and we’re waiting for a response.”

Howson was made captain by manager Simon Grayson this summer following a long stint as vice-captain.
