Bristol City 2 Leeds United 3 - Diouf hits two as United end fine week in style

EL-HADJI Diouf enhanced his growing popularity at Elland Road by guiding Leeds United to a deserved win over Bristol City.

The Senegalese international scored twice to help secure a 3-2 victory at Ashton Gate.

And Michael Tonge’s brilliant finish in the dying stages of the match put the seal on a strong second-half display from Leeds, negating an injury-time reply from Bristol City.

Both sides raised the tempo of the game after a slow first period and United had two good chances to open the scoring shortly after the interval.

Rodolph Austin wasted a golden opportunity by heading Diouf’s free-kick against the crossbar, and the Jamaican saw goalkeeper Tom Heaton dive to parry another headed finish after he and Diouf combined in the same fashion 60 seconds later.

Liam Fontaine should have struck at the other end when he met Martyn Woolford’s free-kick and stabbed the ball wide but Diouf finally broke the deadlock on 63 minutes following a great run from Sam Byram.

The young right-back broke away from City defender Louis Carey and whipped the ball into the centre of the box where Diouf was waiting to turn home a low shot.

But City responded seven minutes later as Richard Foster curled a teasing cross to the far post and Albert Adomah dived in to equalise with a flying header.

Tonge’s had a stabbed effort disallowed moments later after Diouf struck a post with a corner, but Diouf effectively settled the match 10 minutes from time when Fontaine failed to clear a flick off Luciano Becchio.

Tonge then put the result beyond doubt when he ran into space 20 yards from goal and lashed a classy strike beyond Heaton, and City’s second goal – an effort which Byram appeared to knock into his own net – came too late to matter.
