Is King Charles III's coronation the latest risk to Leeds United and other Premier League and Football League fixture lists?

The final day of the Football League season could be the latest affected by the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

It has been confirmed the coronation of King Charles III will take place at Westminster Abbey on May 6. There is also a full programme of Premier League matches scheduled for that weekend, with Leeds United due at Manchester City.

Matches were postponed in September as a mark of respect following the death of Charles' mother, despite most other major professional sports going ahead in Britain. Football decided even to call off grassroots matches on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday following her death and in the case of the Premier League, even Leeds's match at home to Nottingham Forest on the Monday because it fell on that “weekend”.

The funeral took place the following Monday and did not clash with any matches, but Leeds' game at Manchester United was cancelled because it was felt Greater Manchester Police would not have the staffing levels to man such a high-profile game when officers were likely to be needed in London the next day.

As yet, no suitable date has been found for the game to be replayed. In recent seasons the League Two campaign has finished earlier than the divisions above to give it its own moment in the sun but this year, with the calendar complicated by a winter World Cup, all three Football League divisions were due to end on May 6 ready for the play-offs.

The Premier League campaign runs until May 28.

None of the Yorkshire clubs are due in London that weekend but the league will want each division to finish at the same time for the integrity of the competitions.
