Hull interest is dependent on double act staying in tandem

Andre Gray, celebrating scoring for Luton, is a target of interest by Hull City.

The Tigers, keen to press on with their recruitment plans after signing Sam Clucas and Ryan Taylor earlier this week, lodged the offer for the highly-rated Bees’ duo in the past 24 hours.

It was made clear at the time that the only offer on the table was for both players but Brentford are understood to have indicated that they may be willing to do business over England Under-20 defender Odubajo but not Gray.

Hull, however, are adamant that the bid is for both players and that any talks can only progress on the basis of the Yorkshire club being able to sign the striker and full-back. Sources in London have indicated that Brentford rate the two players in the £10m bracket.

Steve Bruce, who has seen ten of last season’s squad depart the KC Stadium this summer, sees Gray and Odubajo as ideal signings to help reshape his side for a promotion push.

Gray is a long-standing target of the Tigers manager who could lose wantaway trio Nikica Jelavic, Abel Hernandez and Dame N’Doye before the closure of the transfer window on September 1 at 6pm.

Odubajo, who moved across the capital from Leyton Orient a year ago, came to the fore last season at Griffin Park after being switched from right midfield to right-back following an injury to Alan McCormack.

There is, though, a school of thought in west London that his best position may yet be further up the field. International recognition followed when Aidy Boothroyd called Greenwich-born Odubajo up to the England Under-20s squad in March and he played the full 90 minutes of a friendly clash against Mexico.

Everton have been linked with a possible move for the 22-year-old defender – his birthday was last Tuesday – but, as yet, Hull are believed to be the only club to have lodged a firm offer, albeit one that is dependent on being able to push through a double package.

As for Gray, Brentford are determined to hold out for as much money as possible due to a sell-on clause inserted in the deal that took the forward to west London from Luton Town in a £500,000 deal.

Last season, Gray netted 18 goals in 50 league and Cup appearances as the Bees reached the Championship play-offs only to lose 5-1 over two legs to Middlesbrough in the semi-finals.

Gray netted their only goal, in a 2-1 first-leg reverse at Griffin Park.

Hull’s trip to Hillsborough on October 17 is one of two Sheffield Wednesday fixtures selected for live transmission by Sky Sports, the other being the trip to Rotherham United the following Friday.

Huddersfield’s derby clash with Leeds on November 7 will also be shown live by the satellite broadcaster.

Blackpool, meanwhile, have been fined £50,000 by the Football Association and ordered to play one game behind closed doors following the pitch invasion that caused Huddersfield Town’s visit to Bloomfield Road on the final  day of last season to be abandoned.

Play was halted after 48 minutes when supporters poured on to the field to protest at Pool chairman Karl Oyston.

A sit-in demonstration then lasted more than an hour before referee Mick Russell called the game off.

Doncaster Rovers have signed winger Dany N’Guessan, released from his contract by Greek side Larissa, on a two-year deal. The 27-year-old started last season at Port Vale.
