Tigers chief Bruce is seeking to appoint a new number two in the next week as he seeks to plug the gap following the departure of Steve Agnew to Middlesbrough last month.

Hull are hoping to appoint an assistant by the time they return to top-flight action against Newcastle United on Saturday week, with the club’s staff and players jetting off to Portugal for a warm-weather training camp tomorrow.

Moves will continue behind the scenes regarding a new assistant-manager with Phelan available after parting company with Norwich City.

Bruce is understood to have held talks with one candidate over the weekend.

Phelan, 52, left the Canaries after serving two months as assistant-manager to Neil Adams.

But following Adams’ exit and the arrival of Alex Neil as manager, Phelan has left Norfolk.
