Huddersfield Town have back-up defensive options says Carlos Corberan

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN head coach Carlos Corberan is confident that his squad possesses the adaptability to cope with the potential loss of the experienced central defensive duo of Richard Stearman and Christopher Schindler.

Stearman is sidelined with a hamstring injury and the club are anxiously awaiting news regarding Schindler, who came off with a potentially serious looking knee problem late on in Saturday’s 2-0 win over QPR amid worrying scenes.

Rarmani Edmonds-Green replaced the German on Saturday and is in line to replace him from the start in Tuesday night’s home derby with Sheffield Wednesday.

Recent signing Alex Vallejo, who is fit again, is another potential option alongside youngster Romoney Crichlow.

Corberan said: “We know Schindler and Stearman are two experienced players. Schindler is a player who is part of the history of the club and who helped it get promoted to the Premier League, while Stearman has experience in a lot of other teams and has played a lot of games in the Championship.

“It is important to always have this experience in the squad, but at the same time, when we created the squad, we did so to try to have more options of players to play in positions.

“Not only the normal players, because we know in our centre-backs, we now have Edmonds-Green and at the same time, we have (Naby) Sarr and Romoney Crichlow-Noble too.

“We continue working with different types of players who can adapt to this position. We have watched (Jonathan) Hogg play at centre-back sometimes and at the same time, we are working with (Harry) Toffolo and he had some minutes in the cup game at centre-back too. So we want players who can cover one gap there.

“At the same time, Vallejo is one player who can play in this position too. In Spain, he was playing as a midfielder and sometimes, he played as a centre-back too.

“Vallejo is added to the squad as the injury he had at the weekend was not a strong injury. He is going to be available in the squad.”

On the current situation regarding Schindler, the Spaniard added: “He had the scan this morning and we are waiting for the result.

“Hopefully, we can have our captain with us as soon as possible, but with the type of injury that he suffered, it created a lot of doubts over what is going to happen with him.

“We need to wait for the results.

“I can never be happy when I lose one of my players. Especially, one of the players who have been important for this club and will continue being important for this club.

“Injuries are a bad moment for our players and we never like that our players suffer these type of injuries. But in football as in life, you have to adapt to any scenario and situation.

“First of all, we need to keep calm until the result of the scan and when it is resolved, we will make our decisions.”
