The Shaymen are searching for Neil Aspin’s successor after bringing an end to the former Leeds United defender’s reign.

Halifax’s board of directors started interviewing last Tuesday after whittling down the list of more than 100 applicants.

Paul Cox, who recently quit as Torquay United manager, is believed to have applied along with Colin Cooper, while Neil Redfearn is another understood to be thought highly of at The Shay.

The Yorkshire club had hoped to have the new man in place by next weekend’s home clash with Cheltenham Town but the board are determined to take their time.

Chief scout Gareth McClelland has overseen two draws at home to Southport and Gateshead, and he will be again in charge at Welling United today.

He said: “I have got a few tough decisions to make for the team. I need to think about whether I need to change things or not after such a good performance.

“All of the boys put in a hell of a shift on Tuesday (against Gateshead) so I need to be careful as some of them played last weekend as well, they need a good rest before we travel.”
