Grant McCann pleased with players' reaction as Hull City take a point at Shrewsbury Town

Greg Docherty's 63rd-minute equaliser earned the Tigers a share of the spoils and ensures that they remain three points clear at the top of League One after title rivals Peterborough, Sunderland and Lincoln all drew.

The East Yorkshiremen fell behind in unfortunate fashion on 52 minutes when Nathaniel Ogbeta's 20-yard free-kick struck the cross-bar then rebounded into the net off Hull goalkeeper Matt Ingram.

But Scottish midfielder Docherty secured his team a share of the spoils nine minute later, curling home from just outside the Shrews' penalty area after his initial effort was blocked.

“Performance-wise we weren’t at our best and we won’t hide away from that," McCann reflected.

"We weren't at our best, but what was really pleasing for me was that after we conceded, we kept going.

"After we scored, I felt that there was only one team that was going to go on and win it, but we’ll take the point and move on to the next one.

"I feel as if it’s a point gained because it very, very is a difficult place to come to.

"All we can do is make sure that we keep picking up the points we need to make sure that we get to the place we want to get to.

"Today is another point added to the total."

Shrewsbury came into Saturday's game 17th in the League One standings, but McCann predicted beforehand that they would prove to be awkward customers, and insisted that a draw is nothing to be sniffed at.

I think we’ve got to respect the point,” added the Northern Irishman.

“It’s a tough place to come to, they [Shrewsbury] are a team that is strong defensively. They get that back-five and midfield four behind the ball, and they try to put you in areas that you don’t want to go.

"It’s a point gained rather than two dropped.”
