Gillingham v Doncaster Rovers – Rested Rovers remain in position of strength, insists Andy Butler

Rovers visit in-form Gillingham this afternoon sitting fifth in the table and boasting games in hand on all of their play-off rivals.

But their promotion push is showing signs of faltering and a run of three matches without a win, or even a goal, means that defeat in Kent could leave them outside the top-six come tonight if results elsewhere go against them.

Butler, however, insists that his team remain in a “fantastic position.”

He said: “I think it’s important that we have points on the board.

“Teams are chasing us but I’d rather be in our position with the points on the board rather than chasing. We’ve got some tough games coming up, but at the same time we’ve got some games that I feel that, as a club, Doncaster Rovers should win.

“So. that’s my message to the players, we’re in a fantastic position. I strongly believe that there is great character within this club and a great team morale. I believe they’ll battle on through adversity and we have.

“[Recent] results haven’t gone for us, but we are still in a fantastic position and have a lot of points to fight for.”

Butler granted his squad some time off on this week in a bid to freshen things up ahead of today’s clash with a powerful Gillingham side who have come out on top in four of their previous five outings.

“We gave them the day off on Thursday and allowed them to refresh their minds and bodies,” he added.

“You have to take your opportunities for players to have their rest.

“Hopefully, they’ll come back ready for a tough game.”
