The Manchester United custodian has stood in capably for the injured Ross Turnbull, so much so that manager Paul Dickov has the insurance of not having to rush the former Midldesbrough and Chelsea keeper back into the fray following a calf injury.

Johnstone will line up between the posts in Saturday’s home derby with Sheffield Wednesday as Rovers seek to continue their fine form at the Keepmoat which has since them not suffer a defeat in the league since Boxing Day.

Dickov, who confirmed that Gabriel Tamas will undergo surgery today on his fractured cheekbone, with no new developments regarding his future, said: “Sam has been outstanding, but it doesn’t surprise me having watched Sam for the last two years.

“I know how highly he is rated; not just at Manchester United, but in the England set-up. He has all the makings of being a top keeper and is proving that.”
