“It was a really professional performance which got us back on track,” said Dickov.

People may look at Colchester being down there, but they beat Bristol City last week and we’ve seen what Bristol City did to us.

“So getting back on track with a clean sheet was important because we’ve conceded some poor goals recently.”

Stevens volleyed home his first goal for the club in the first half before Tyson wrapped up the points seven minutes from time.

Rovers could have found themselves behind early on only for former Sheffield United striker Chris Porter to blaze a penalty high and wide after he had been pushed by Reece Wabara in attempting to meet Sam Clohessy’s cross.

Headers from Andy Butler and Abdul Razak had struck the woodwork before Elliott Hewitt curled one wide for Colchester before testing Stephen Bywater.

Stevens volleyed Rovers into a half-time lead from 20 yards after Tyson’s driven cross was only half cleared.

Both sides had chances after the break before Rovers finally got their reward seven minutes from time when Tyson scored from the spot after Dean Furman had been fouled by Alex Wynter just inside the area.
