Danny Rohl dwells on Sheffield Wednesday positives despite missed opportunity of 1-1 draw with Swansea City

When Bailey Cadamarteri gave the Owls a first-half lead at home to Swansea City it moved them out of a Championship relegation zone they have been in all season in the as-it-stands table.

They had won the first half tactically, letting the visitors have the bulk of possession whilst they created the vast majority of the chances, and should have been leading before Cadamarteri's goal, Will Vaulks missing the target from a pull-back.

Ike Ugbo hit the crossbar at 1-0 but minutes later slack marking – and an accidental handball – allowed Jamal Lowe to equalise at a corner. Even then, the hosts had chances to win it but ultimately they had to settle for a point which keeps them 23rd in the table but drew them level on points with 21st-placed Birmingham City with seven games left.

"First we take the point because in our situation every point is important," said Rohl.

"We know we're a little bit disappointed because especially in the second half we created a lot of chances to win the game but you have to be ruthless and clinical in both boxes.

"We had chances and we conceded for me too easy a goal from a corner but all in all, this week we spoke about doing our basics right – not just tactical things, willingness, togetherness, running for each other – and we did them all.

"If we keep going like this in the next seven games we have a big, big chance.

"If somebody had told me in December we would be so close to coming over the line, I will take this. We are in this situation because we did well in the last weeks.

"Of course we need wins but today we take the point, put this game away and focus on Monday."

The goal was not the only decision Rohl was unhappy with.

"Maybe there was a handball," said the German. "There were some 50-50 decisions in the box which went Swansea's way.

"For me there was a clear penalty (for a second-half foul on Ugbo) but I will not look to excuses because we had the chance to make this game done for us.

"The only thing is that we were not clinical in the box.

"Sometimes it was unlucky, we hit the crossbar when it could have been 2-0 and from there we can bring the game home.

"We tried until the end to make it 2-1 and the atmosphere in the stadium was fantastic. We should take the good things from this game and keep going.

"I saw a team doing everything.

"We didn't score the second goal but this is football and for me it's about looking forward and trying on Monday to take points."

Rohl's opposite number, Luke Williams, said he was unaware there was even any dispute about his side’s goal in an incident the officials were not well-placed to see.

Owls centre-back Di'Shon Bernard suffered a muscle injury in the warm-up, and was withdrawn for Bambo Diaby.

“Hopefully with Di’Shon it was the right point to bring him out, but you never know with muscles," said the manager. "When you’re playing again in two days it could be that he’s out.

"We don’t have much time (before Monday’s game at Middlesbrough), but I have to find the balance of risk when it comes to bringing injured players back – especially with muscle injuries, because if they get another it could mean them being out for the rest of the season."
