Dagenham & Redbridge 1 York City 0: Angry fans turn on Minstermen players

YORK City's sorry season sunk to a new low as fans clashed with a player at the end of a defeat against the bottom club.

An angry altercation saw left-back Femi Ilesanmi respond to abuse from the away end after a sizeable group of York supporters congregated around the players’ tunnel to vent their fury following the final whistle.

This was Dagenham’s first home success of the season and left the Minstermen five points adrift of safety, having played three more games than third-bottom Hartlepool.

York will also be without captain Russell Penn for Saturday’s home match with Barnet after he was sent off for handling on the line.

Scott Flinders went on to save Joss Labadie’s 58th-minute penalty, but the 10 men continued to struggle and right-back Josh Passley wrapped up the points.

A poor first half saw Ashley Hemmings call Flinders into a fine save and Christian Doidge head just wide for the Daggers.

After the break, Flinders dropped a cross from Passley, leading to the corner that saw Penn throw up his arm to keep out Oliver Muldoon’s header.

The recalled York goalkeeper dived to his left to keep out Labadie’s spot-kick, but Passley swept in from 12 yards on 78 minutes to settle the contest from a cross by Joe Widdowson.

It was a 15th defeat in 21 matches during Jackie McNamara’s troubled reign and left York needing a huge improvement to avoid returning to the National League they left behind four years ago.
