Cool heads helping Huddersfield Town maintain home comforts

AFTER losing the plot late on Boxing Day, it was Huddersfield Town’s players who displayed the ‘cool heads’ three days later as they were afforded a cathartic moment.

Proof that the clock goes around quickly arrived when Naby Sarr grabbed a last-gasp winner to secure a dramatic victory for the Terriers in their Roses fixture with Blackburn Rovers – to help compensate for their stoppage-time loss at Barnsley on December 26.

The personal glory belonged to big defender Sarr, who picked the perfect time to register his first brace in English football as Town hit back to claim victory only minutes after Rovers levelled in a pulsating 2-1 triumph.

Plenty of drama has been reserved for the tail-end of Huddersfield’s games so far this season with Carlos Corberan’s side hitting crucial late goals against the likes of Middlesbrough, Rotherham United and now Blackburn, while also being on the receiving end themselves.

Sarr, whose winner came four minutes after Sam Gallagher’s 86th-minute equaliser as Town won on home soil for the fifth time on the trot at league level for the first time since September 2016, said: “It is not the first time we have been in this situation and I remember Josh Koroma scored a late winner as well (against Boro).

“We did not change our mindset and we kept a cool head and kept going until the end and we had the chances and I was lucky to score. So that is good.

“In the French second division, I once scored two, but did not get the winner, so this is much better.”

Sarr showed the instincts of a striker with a predatory finish high past Rovers goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski to win the game, with his earlier headed opener also clinically taken.

On his winning goal, he observed: “I thought I was offside at first, but I was thinking that I was just going to finish it and see what happens and luckily it went in the ‘top bins’.

“It is really good. It is not every game where I am going to score two goals, so of course, I am really happy.

“But most of all, I am really happy with the win. It was a great team effort, from the keeper to the strikers and the substitutes, everyone and I think we deserved it in the end.”
