Chris Powell claimed he was “embarrassed” by the reception he received after suffering a nightmare return to former club Charlton.

Huddersfield Town manager Powell received a rapturous welcome on his first time back to the Valley and then watched man of the match Tony Watt tear his side apart.

Watt capped a fine display by netting two second-half goals to add to Johann Gudmundsson’s first-half free-kick.

Powell, who left Charlton in March, 2014, said: “We were second best. We were beaten by the better team and we just couldn’t get going over the course of the game. We didn’t deserve anything.

“My relationship with Charlton supporters and the way they are, I wouldn’t think anything less of them.

“It was beyond what any supporters would do to the opposition manager. But I’m not surprised with how they were.

“It was very touching and emotional for me but I’m quite embarrassed as well. They have moved on and we have moved on.”

With tickets priced at £5, the ground was packed and the home fans were on their feet thanks to Gudmunsson’s 34th-minute free-kick from 25 yards.

Charlton were on top and extended their advantage three minutes into the second half thanks to Watt.

Charlton sealed the win and moved level with the visitors on 42 points via the impressive Scottish striker in the 71st minute on an afternoon to forget for Powell and his players.
