Bradford City, Barnsley and Leeds United the teams to catch in Yorkshire – YP Power Rankings

SOME fun and games in our latest Yorkshire Post Power Rankings list and it is amazing what just one win can do.

Form horses Bradford City and Barnsley are fighting it out at the top but below them, there is all sorts of movement with it being particularly tough at the minute for Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United.

1: Bradford City WWLWWW (=) – What a 2021 it has been so far for newly-appointed permanent Bantams bosses Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars. Celebrated their full-time appointment with a late victory over Leyton Orient. It represented the eighth win in 12 matches under their watch, with City having lost just once. Small wonder that play-off is emanating among the claret and amber. City are in second spot in League Two’s six-match form guide.

2: Barnsley DLWWWW (+1) – It’s been a fabulous February, all right. Barnsley can round off a perfect month with victory over Millwall on Saturday to further boost an increasingly compelling play-off pitch. The Reds won a fourth Championship game on the spin - for the first time in the productive era of Valerien Ismael - in their midweek win over Stoke to move to within a point of their points total for last season. With a third of the campaign still to go, it must be noted. Outstanding. Second in the Championship’s latest six-match ratings.

3: Leeds United WLWLLW (+4) – Desperate unfortunately not to take anything home from Friday’s narrow loss to Wolves, Leeds did not feel sorry for themselves and produced a beguiling, brilliant home performance against Southampton, which showcased Bielsa-ball at its best. Ranked seventh in the Premier League’s six-match guide, United are eyeing a second double of another rewarding campaign against Aston Villa at the weekend. Good times..

4: Harrogate Town WWLWLW (-2) – Homesickness, what homesickness? Hit back following a disappointing weekend loss at Scunthorpe with a midweek victory over Mansfield - which secured the club’s noteworthy first ever double as a Football League club. It was their third win in four matches at Wetherby Road and has vanquished all talk of their home toils earlier this term. Simon Weaver’s side are ranked a sound seventh in League Two’s latest six-match guide.

5: Middlesbrough DLLWWL (+5) – Secured a fine weekend win at play-off rivals Reading at the weekend, only to come back down to earth after a midweek home loss to Bristol City. Home form is bedevilling the Teessiders’ push for the top six and is threatening to be the damning story of the campaign after five losses in their past six matches at the Riverside. Jump up purely because of the failings of others.

6: Huddersfield Town DDLLWL (+5) – Like Boro, Town enjoyed a stellar Saturday only to crash-land in midweek - and their rise also owes much to the bad form of other Yorkshire sides. Claimed their maiden win of 2021 with a brilliant success over form side Swansea, but promptly lost at Derby on Tuesday to extend their run without a victory in that corner of the East Midlands to 25 matches. Still a win can go a long way for Town, whose home form is the eighth best in the division. By contrast, their away form is poor. It is the second worst in the Championship and they are without a win in 11. Go to Preston on Saturday.

7: Doncaster Rovers WWLLLD (+2) – Another glorious chapter in the James Coppinger story sees Rovers jump up a couple of spots after a dramatic late draw against Grant McCann’s Hull City. But a four-match winless sequence and return of just one point from the last 12 is worrying for a promotion contender. Sixteenth in League One’s latest six-game guide, Rovers visit Ipswich at the weekend with work to do.

8: Hull City LDLWDL (-2) – A Mallik-Wilks inspired success at Wigan in isolation, Hull’s form has been a concern. Just two wins have arrived in their past eight league outings - hardly promotion statistics. Given that, it is no surprise they are ranked a poor 20th in League One’s latest six-match guide. Only two sides have scored fewer home goals than Hull throughout the division.

On their travels, it is a different story, with the Tigers being the top-scorers, with their tally over double the amount that they have scored at home. They will be glad to be hitting the road to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

9: Sheffield Wednesday WLWLLL (-5) – After the hope and relief of the Wycombe win, Wednesday have nosedived in a bad way by virtue of three miserable losses without so much as scoring a goal. Their weekend defeat to a direct relegation rival in Birmingham City was particularly painful for the Owls, whose run of five successive home wins came to an abrupt end. Sixteenth in the Championship’s six-match guide, the Owls visit Luton on Saturday.

10: Rotherham United WWLLLL (-4) – After the highs and hope of the early part of the new year, a run of fourth successive defeats for the first time this term has checked the Millers’ momentum in their survival quest. The good thing is they are not playing badly, as four single-goal defeats testify. But they could not half do with a win when they entertain play-off wobbling Reading on Saturday. Fifteenth in the Championship’s six-match guide.

11: Sheffield United LWLWLL (-3) – Planning can now begin in earnest for the Championship after a grim defeat at Fulham as the telling nail was hammered into the Blades’ coffin. Yes, the mathematics show there are times and games left, but for the realists, it is pretty much all over and now it is about pride and planning, pretty much, for United.
