Barnsley v Coventry: Tykes’ prospects on the up for Johnson

With a maiden win under his belt and an Oakwell crowd to entertain tonight, new Barnsley manager Lee Johnson has begun to talk up his team’s chances.

That debut victory at Gillingham moved Barnsley into the top half and to within four points of the play-offs in a congested League One table.

Not long ago they were looking nervously over their shoulders, hence the board’s decision to dispense with the services of Danny Wilson.

But three wins on the bounce have transformed perceptions and ahead of his Oakwell debut against Coventry tonight, Johnson said: “Somebody is going to come out of the pack so why can’t it be us?

“The reality is that it’s going to be a very tough game on Tuesday night.

“At our very best we have a good chance of winning it, but if we drop off our best we have a good chance of losing the game.

“It’s up to the players and the staff to make sure that we are at it and make sure we come flying out of the blocks and go and achieve what would be a massive three points.”

They will have to do so without the services of goalkeeper Ross Turnbull, who is unlikely to figure again this season due to a back injury.

Johnson said: “He has a back problem that may or may not need to be operated on. We have to make sure we do the right thing for Ross.”
