Barnsley FC will fight until the end, insists Gerhard Struber

DEFIANT Barnsley head coach Gerhard Struber has pledged that his young Reds squad will fight for their Championship lives until the very end - after their survival hopes suffered a blow following a 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers Luton Town.

In a definitive week against three relegation rivals, Barnsley have mustered just one point from the first two matches ahead of Saturday's home encounter with Wigan.

Struber's side produced a much improved performance at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday - following Saturday's atrocious 4-0 defeat at Stoke - but were frustrated in having to settle for just one point after spurning several chances in a game they largely dominated.

It took the arrival of late substitute Aapo Halme to rescue a point for the Reds, with the Finnish defender's fourth goal of the season - only Cauley Woodrow and Connor Chaplin have scored more - cancelling out an opener from ex-Reds midfielder Luke Berry.

Struber was at least enthused by the character of his Barnsley side, who produced a strong first half and forceful finale and while he admits that the result was a case of two points lose, he has vowed that the Reds will not throw in the towel.

"Our situation and expectation is that we have to fight until the last game and pick up points in the next games," the Austrian said.

"Our goal was three points and we came away with one, but we will look forward to our next game against Wigan, who are a difficult opponent.

"But when we have this shape and performance like at Luton, it will be very difficult for Wigan against us.

"The boys showed me that they never give up and there was a very good energy from everyone to fight back. The first half was completely in our hands and this is the right mood."

Echoing the comments of Struber, late substitute Elliot Simoes added: "We will never give up and fight until the last game.

"We showed a different attitude to Stoke and had a fighting attitude and never gave up.

"It was frustrating not to get the three points as we should have.

"But in the next four games, we still believe we can win them. Anything is possible in the next four finals."
