Swashbuckling Kaye lights up newcomers

NEWLY-promoted Barkisland sentenced reigning champions Hoylandswaine to an opening day defeat by 33 runs at Haigh Lane, with Alex Kaye and captain Darren Robinson in outstanding form.

Opening the innings, Kaye made a swashbuckling 95 and Robinson contributed a half-century from the middle order as Barkisland totalled 235-9.

Despite half-centuries from Alex Morris and John Sadler, Hoylandswaine struggled against Robinson, who took 6-70 off his 15 overs, and Chris Greenwood who had an impressive 3-58 return from 23.1 overs.

Elland, who finished 15 points behind Hoylandswaine last season to take the runners-up spot, were victorious by two wickets in a thrilling finish against hosts Marsden.

Chris Kilner made an unbeaten 62 but Marsden were restricted to 162-7 in their 50 overs. Greg Finn hit an undefeated 55 in the reply and Chris Goulden struck the winning runs off the penultimate ball.

There were seven wicket hauls for Shepley’s medium-quick bowler Craig Glover in an eight wicket rout of Hall Bower and Delph & Dobcross leg-spinner Arron Lilley, whose side won by 149 runs against Shelley.

Glover took 7-28, his 15 overs containing eight maidens, as Hall Bower were shot out for 64 in 30.2 overs.

Delph had half-century makers in Kevin Hook and Faisal Butt as the home side posted 227-9.

Opener Joe Sykes made a valiant 43, including nine fours and a six, for Shelley in their reply but Lilley grabbed 7-23 off 10.2 overs to shoot the visitors out for only 98 in 31.2 overs.

All-rounder Gurman Randhawa took four wickets and then struck 74 in a partnership of 112 with Greg Buckley in Kirkburton’s four wicket win over visitors Skelmanthorpe.

Tom Brook’s unbeaten 42 and 4-16 return assisted Scholes to a 16-run win over Honley.

Almondbury Wesleyans and Moorlands had wins over Paddock and Armitage Bridge, respectively, in the Cedar Court Conference.

Fellow newcomers Denby and Denby Dale, however, lost to Almondbury and Emley Clarence in their fixtures.
