Pakistan stand firm to clinch Test series

Pakistan claimed a morale-boosting Test series win over Sri Lanka after the third and final match between the sides in Sharjah ended in a draw.

The Pakistani game has been rocked by the custodial sentences handed to former captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir in the UK last week for their roles in a spot-fixing conspiracy, but yesterday’s result meant Pakistan’s nine-wicket win in the opening Test in Dubai was enough for a 1-0 series victory.

Rain meant no play was possible in the first session and when play finally did get under way, Sri Lanka quickly declared on 181-6, leaving designated hosts Pakistan needing a notional 255 to win from 61 overs. The captains eventually shook hands on the draw with Pakistan on 87-4 in fading light.
