Cornish Pirates 29 Rotherham Titans 24: Titans battle for bonus points

Demonstrating great fighting qualities, Rotherham, outclassed in the opening 20 minutes during which they weakly handed over 22 points without reply, fought back to earn two priceless bonus points at Cambourne.

A superb try in injury time by Tom Allen grabbed the first bonus point and seconds later, the conversion by Matt Rhodes confirmed that Rotherham would leave Cambourne with enough points to move them out of the bottom four.

Given Pirates' control and superiority, leading to tries by Jonny Bentley, Richard Bright and the award of a penalty try, Rotherham's recovery defied belief.

Their forwards exploded, creating tries for Nigel Conroy, Jon Feeley and Jon Skurr, throughout. Rotherham were suddenly competitive and had slashed the Pirates' lead to 29-17.

Cornwall finished the first half strongly scoring a fourth try as Paul Devlin again exposed weaknesses in Rotherham's defence.

In a thrilling climax, Rotherham's pack won possession again, giving Allen the opportunity to dash more than 20 yards.

Following the conversion, Rotherham had to survive anxious moments as the Pirates' forwards tried to smash through, but solid defence triumphed. On this evidence, they may just avoid the relegation nplay-offs.
