Clancy finishes second despite late puncture

Yorkshire Olympic ace Ed Clancy sprinted to second spot in the prestigious Stafford Kermesse, and helped the Rapha Condor-JLT team dominate the podium with Luke Grivell-Mellor taking the win by just one second, while colleague Chris Opie was third in the hour-long circuit race.

Clancy, 29 and from Holmfirth, was edged out by just one second at the end of the contest after an eventful race which saw him suffer a late puncture and have to take a lap out before rejoining.

As the bell sounded for the final lap Clancy was on the front, but his young team-mate secured his first professional win as he edged ahead.

Also at Stafford, Doncaster’s Tom Stewart (Madison Genesis) was third in the Stafford Grand Prix on Saturday, which was a round of the Elite Road Series.

The 24-year-old was part of a10-rider break which dominated the 50-mile race, and he took a good third in a photo finish at the dramatic end to the race, with Frenchman Morgan Kneisky (Team Raleigh) taking the win.

Also in the break was Huddersfield’s Richard Hepworth (Velosure-Giordana) and he finished sixth on the line.

In time trialling, Leeds ace Andy Jackson took victory in the Derby Mercury CC 25-mile event at Etwall near the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border, clocking 47-21 to win by exactly a minute from Charles Taylor (South Pennine RC).

And in the Holme Valley Wheelers 15 near Penistone, Blair Buss (Team Swift) took the win in 36-02, just three seconds quicker than Doug Hart (Ilkley CC), while Andrew Pearson (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was another five seconds back in third.

Czech Republic rider Roman Kreuziger has been provisionally suspended by the UCI due to a biological passport violation, his Tinkoff-Saxo team have announced.

Manon Carpenter led a British one-two in the women’s downhill UCI Mountain Bike World Cup stage at Mont-Sainte-Anne in Canada.

A time of four minutes 47.285 seconds was enough to give Carpenter her third victory of the season. Rachel Atherton was runner-up, 0.724secs behind Carpenter.
