Leeds’s Gabby Adcock and her husband Chris, the world No 5 pairing, set them on the way to an opening victory in Group F with a comfortable 21-8 21-17 defeat of brother and sister Ciaran and Sinead Chambers.

Leeds’s Kate Robertshaw together with Heather Olver wrapped up a good day’s work with victory in the women’s doubles, beating Caroline Black and Sinead Chambers 21-7 21-10.

Gabby Adcock said: “We have got a decent team here.

“There are some other good teams, but if we all play well and get behind each other we’ve got a good chance.”

England are next in action against Jersey today.

Wales were beaten 4-1 in their Group D opener against Australia while Scotland recorded a 5-0 success against the Seychelles.

England’s world No 6 squash player James Willstrop, of Pontefract, eased to an 11-4 11-3 11-4 victory over Bermudan Nicholas Kyme as he began his medal quest.

Defending champion Nick Matthew, from Sheffield, completed a routine victory, taking just 21 minutes to triumph 11-3 11-3 11-1 against unranked Xavier Koenig of Mauritius, who squeezes his sport between shifts as an insolvency practitioner on the island.

Harrogate’s Jenny Duncalf reached the second round by beating New Zealand’s Amanda Landers-Murphy 11-2 11-0 11-8.
