Windmill set to welcome its first visitors since cap lifted into place

THE public are being given the first opportunity to visit an 18th century windmill since a landmark was reached in its £550,000 restoration.

An 11.5-tonne cap was lifted into place on the Holgate windmill in York in November, and this weekend visitors are being a sneak preview of the Grade II listed building ahead of a series of open days during the summer.

The mill will be open on Sunday between 11am and 4pm, and on Monday next week from 6pm until 8pm.

The Holgate Windmill Preservation Society's chairman, Bob Anderton, said: "The restoration is gradually taking shape. It is very gratifying because people have stopped me in the street to say how great the windmill is looking now.

"It is much more of a landmark now that the cap has been in place, and it is a very striking sight on the skyline."

The preservation society is applying for grants from organisations including the Heritage Lottery Fund to secure another 100,000 to complete the restoration.

It is hoped that the project, which was launched five years ago, will be completed towards the end of 2011.

Adult admission for the pre-season visits on Sunday and Monday is 3, while accompanied children can gain free entry.
