Williamson faces testing over ‘suspect’ bowling action

The Kiwi was reported by both the umpires and match referee Chris Broad at the end of the second Test in Trinidad, which ended last Friday and saw the tourists crash to a 10-wicket defeat. Under ICC rules, Williamson, who will re-join Yorkshire early next month, must undergo testing of his action within 21 days but can continue to bowl until the results are known.

It is unclear on what date the testing will take place but sources suggest it will be in Loughborough after his return from the Caribbean.

Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket, Martyn Moxon, said: “I don’t know what it means in terms of when he is due to be tested as yet.

“I presume it is just a day, but I am not sure as yet. He is due back between 7-9 of July, and I would hope that it won’t impact upon any matches.”

Williamson was always due to miss the LV=County Championship game with Durham, which starts at Headingley on Monday July 7. And with the testing of his bowling action having to be completed by the following Saturday, it seems likely that he will travel to Loughborough very soon after touching down in England.

Yorkshire travel to Durham on Friday, July 11 for a Twenty20 match and then face Derbyshire at Chesterfield a couple of days later in the same format.

Williamson bowled 15.2 overs in the second Test for figures of 1-43 and an ICC statement said: “The umpires’ report cited concerns over a number of deliveries that they considered to be suspect and believed that his action needed to be tested.”

That report was handed to the New Zealand management after the conclusion of the Trinidad Test. New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson said: “Kane has never changed the way he has bowled in international cricket over two years ago.”

Williamson has bowled 58.4 overs in his six County Championship appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Aaron Finch looks like missing the Twenty20 quarter-finals if Yorkshire qualify from the group stages of the competition.

Moxon said: “Aaron will have to leave at the end of July because he has got a (training) camp in Australia from the beginning of August.

“We have known about Aaron for a while, that he would be a doubt if we got to the quarter-finals of the Twenty20.”
