Water firm tackles sewer flooding

Work is starting on a project to tackle sewer flooding in Cleckheaton.

Almost 40 properties are set to benefit from the project by Yorkshire Water to improve its sewer system and reduce the risk of sewer flooding to local properties and roads.

A huge underground waste water storage tank capable of holding 2 million litres of waste water – roughly the equivalent to the volume of water contained within an Olympic swimming pool – will be installed.

The project also entails 728 metres of new sewer under St Peg Close and Brooke Street to connect the new tank to the current sewer network.

The work, which is expected to be completed by April, is part of Yorkshire Water’s £120m investment to upgrade its sewer network and treatment facilities.

The new storage tank will collect storm water and hold it until it is safe for it to be released back into the local sewer network.

Motorists are being warned to expect some disruption. A section of Brooke Street will be closed for a small part of the project but Yorkshire Water says access for residents will be maintained at all times.
