Waste workers dig in to help spruce up community park

EMPLOYEES who usually deal with Sheffield’s waste took a break from the bins when they helped members of a community group tidy up neglected areas of a city park.

The volunteers from Veolia Environmental Services used their gardening skills at High Hazels Park helping to prune, weed and plant the sensory gardens.

The morning was organised by the Friends of High Hazels Park group which has been working to keep the park in good condition.

A team of 15 Veolia volunteers helped the friends group in digging out overgrown shrubs, pruning the plants and tidying the flower beds.

The areas are now ready for visitors to enjoy throughout the autumn and ready for planting in spring.

Friends of High Hazels Park formed when local residents became concerned that the Victorian park in the centre of the city’s Darnall area was deteriorating.

The residents got together and formed a charity which now works with a wide range of partners to make improvements to the area so it can be enjoyed by people who live and work nearby.

Paul Campbell, chair of friends of High Hazels Park, said: “We are really grateful for Veolia’s help to maintain the park. We rely on volunteers to help out and take part in all sorts of gardening activities. The team’s contribution will make a big impact for our visitors.”

Annabel Johnston, recycling officer at Veolia added: “We all enjoyed working on the gardens and seeing the difference our hard work made.

“I hope we’ve made a real difference for local residents who use the park.”
