Warriors come to Peace Gardens to promote combat demonstration

ROMAN gladiators demonstrated combat skills in Sheffield's Peace Gardens yesterday in preparation for a battle at Bolsover Castle this weekend.

On Sunday, May 2 and Monday, May 3 the team of gladiators will be at the castle near Chesterfield, along with Viking warriors and medieval knights, to take part in a Warriors Through The Ages event being staged by English Heritage.

Paul Harston from Roman Tours, which provides educational tours of historic venues across the country, said: "There were different styles of gladiator each with their own weapons and tactics, like the retiarius who used the net and trident or the heavily armoured murmillo."

he added: "Children will have the opportunity to meet the Gladiators and cheer for their champion. We're also on the look out for any adventurous adults interested in training to be a gladiator."

As well as the main combat displays, visitors to Bolsover Castle this weekend will be able to wander through three living history encampments and see demonstrations of how life was lived in each period.

Viking warriors will show battle tactics and medieval knights will be fighting in the "tournament of foote".
