Warning over abuse of free parking

A COUNCIL is taking a zero tolerance approach to abuse of the Blue Badge disabled parking scheme.

Hull Council is warning people they face prosecution if they use a stolen, fake or someone else’s Blue Badge.

The council has been getting complaints from Blue Badge holders who are unable to find a free parking space. It is urging people to report anyone they suspect of using a Blue Badge fraudulently online or by calling the council on 01482 300300.

Lord Mayor Danny Brown, who is a Blue Badge holder, said: “Misuse of the system can be the difference between being able to get out to the shops, visit a friend, take part in leisure facilities or be stuck at home. I welcome the council’s crackdown on abuse and hope that this reminds people to think before they abuse the system.”

Mark Baggley, from the Choices and Rights Disability Coalition, said they received many complaints over abuse of the system: “Offenders are not just breaking the law, but denying disabled people the opportunity to go about their normal business.”
