War hero gets £15m civic scheme underway

A decorated war hero took time to reflect after marking the start of building work on a multi-million pound hospital and civic centre development in his home town.

Lance Corporal Colin Spooner, from 2nd Battalion Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, who was awarded the Military Cross last autumn while serving in Afghanistan, cut the turf for the new development in Selby, next to the existing War Memorial Hospital. The new 15m health facilities and council headquarters are expected to be open next

year.

Lance Corporal Spooner said: "Selby's my home town and I'm really pleased to be able to be involved in the start of work on this development which will mean a lot to people living around here."

The new 24-bed hospital will employ 116 staff and have 54 consulting rooms, while the civic centrewill house 241 workers spread over two

floors.
