Walkers to celebrate special year for Wainwright route

Walkers are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Alfred
Wainwright’s well-known Coast to Coast guide book this year
with an event at Robin Hood’s Bay.

The long distance Coast to Coast footpath across three National Parks, named in 2004 as the second best walk in the world, will be honoured on September 7 with a special plaque at Robin Hood’s Bay, in the North York Moors, to welcome walkers.

Derek Cockell, secretary of the Wainwright Society said: “The society hopes that placing this board at Robin Hood’s Bay will help bring the work of Alfred Wainwright to the attention of the public as well as providing a focal point for walkers completing the walk.”

The information board is a joint project between the North York Moors National Park Authority, Fylingdales Parish Council and The Wainwright Society and will be unveiled by Peter Linney, a recently retired secretary of the Wainwright Society.

Members of the society will commemorate Wainwright with a walk on the day from Robin Hood’s Bay to Hawsker.

The society decided that it would designate the Coast to Coast Walk as its main beneficiary in 2013.

The Coast to Coast Walk from the Lake District to the North York Moors National Park was devised by Wainwright himself and set out in his 1973 guidebook to the route.

The 190 mile long distance footpath passes through three contrasting national parks: the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the North York Moors National Park.

Wainwright suggested a way of breaking the walk miles into stages, each of which is to be completed in a day.
