Violent few told to stay away from derby game

POLICE in Sheffield have warned a "small minority" of "troublesome" football fans to stay away from the derby match on Sunday.

A large number of police officers and community support officers will be on patrol at Hillsborough. Superintendent Rachel Barber, who will be leading the policing operation, said: "For the small minority of people known for football violence and who see the fixture as an opportunity to cause trouble, they are advised to stay away.

"Sheffield Wednesday FC and South Yorkshire Police will not tolerate or allow anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs into the ground."

The police said violence and disorder has decreased at local football matches owing to "robust policing" and this has seen more families returning to the stadiums.

A spokesman said: "A safe, enjoyable family atmosphere is something the police and partners are determined to maintain at local football matches.

"This is at the heart of Sheffield's success in forming part of the England bid to host the 2018 World Cup and all eyes will be on the city this weekend."

No tickets for the match will be on sale at Hillsborough on the day. Supporters are also advised to use public transport to get to the game, which kicks off at 1pm.

Strategic commander for the match, Chief Superintendent Simon Torr, said: "We will be making sure there is minimum disruption before and after the game and that, everyone enters and leaves the stadium safely.

"However, it is acknowledged that the large anticipated crowds will result in some disruption to traffic and pedestrians near to kick off and at the end of the match.

"To ensure the safety of fans attending the game, policing operations to prevent the disorder caused by a tiny minority are already underway."
