Motorists are able to drive along the stretch between junctions 27 for Gildersome and 28 for Tingley during busy periods.

It is the first section of “managed motorway” in the north of England and was launched yesterday following extensive testing.

Work on the remainder of the £133 million scheme, which runs from junction 25 for Brighouse to junction 30 for Rothwell, is expected to open later in the year.

Project manager David Pilsworth said: “Road users can start to feel the benefits of reduced congestion and improved journey times.

“This is a significant milestone in the delivery of the scheme, which is on target for completion in the autumn.”

Variable speed limits will be indicated by a red ring on the signs. Lane closure information will also be displayed as required.

The hard shoulder will continue to be used for emergency purposes only when not being used as an extra lane.

The speed limit on the entire section remains set at a maximum of 50mph.

Further sections of the hard shoulder are due to be opened to traffic in the summer.
