Video: Car hits train as it skids on snowy level crossing

A DRIVER was treated for shock today after his car skidded on to a level crossing in snow and was then hit by a train.

British Transport Police said the 44-year-old managed to get out of his Ford Mondeo on the crossing near Selby, North Yorkshire, before the slow moving train crashed into it.

A spokeswoman said police received a call at 8.18am saying a car had been struck by a train on an automatic half-barrier level crossing at Hagg Lane, South Duffield.

The train involved was the 07.33 First Transpennine Hull to Manchester Piccadilly service.

The spokeswoman said: "Officers attended the scene, along with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and the North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

"This was a very slow speed collision and there are no injuries reported.

"The train driver had seen the obstruction on the crossing and applied the emergency brake and the car driver had exited the vehicle, a blue Ford Mondeo, before it was struck.

"It appears that the car driver attempted to brake as he approached the crossing but his vehicle skidded on the snow and on to the tracks.

"The car driver, a 44-year-old from South Duffield, was treated for shock at the scene by paramedics but did not suffer any further injuries and did not require hospital treatment."

She said trains were halted in the area while emergency services attended but the line was handed back to Network Rail at 10.33am. However, a passenger texted the Yorkshire Post to report that he and others had been sitting on the train for an hour and a half.
