Commentator receives MBE

RUGBY league commentator Ray French shows off his MBE outside Buckingham Palace yesterday after the Queen presented him with the honour during an investiture ceremony.

The former international player, who had kept his inclusion on the New Year Honours list a secret even from his wife, was honoured for services to sport.

Sir Keith Porter, the consultant responsible for co-ordinating the care of British troops injured in Afghanistan, received his knighthood.

Author and royal biographer Sir William Shawcross, who wrote the official biography of the Queen Mother, was made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (RVO) while writer Lady Antonia Fraser was made a dame for services to literature and veteran Conservative MP Sir Peter Bottomley was knighted.
