Two in court over death of dad in West Yorkshire street attack

TWO men were remanded in custody today after they were charged with the murder of a 55-year-old man who died following a street attack in West Yorkshire.

John Collins was found suffering head injuries following the attack in Oakes Avenue in Brockholes, near Huddersfield, on Wednesday evening.

He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and was later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary where he died on Thursday.

Douglas Stephen and Christopher Burton, both 28, appeared at Dewsbury Magistrates' Court after they were charged with murder, along with Louise Beebey, 23, who faced a charge of assisting an offender.

All three were remanded in custody to appear before Bradford Crown Court on Tuesday.

A third man arrested in connection with the incident was released without charge.

Mr Collins's daughter Melanie, 26, and son Christopher, 24, paid tribute to their father.

In a statement, they said: "He was a much loved father and always very supportive of us and he will be sadly missed."

Neighbour Gavin Bull said there were problems with anti-social behaviour in the street.

Mr Bull said: "Bless him, he got into the ambulance on his own but he had blood pouring from a head wound."

He added: "He would always stop and have a laugh with you."

West Yorkshire Police said the area was not a "hot-spot" for anti-social behaviour.
