Trees tribute to Holocaust victims

Tree officer David Jones was yesterday helping schoolchildren to planting trees in a Hull park as a lasting tribute to victims of the Nazi Holocaust during the Second World War.

Children from Westcott Primary School were in East Park where up to 100 trees were being planted on beds near the boating lake on Holocaust Memorial Day. Hundreds more will be planted at Hull schools.

The trees, native species including maple, birch and rowan, have been donated by the Woodland Trust.

Lord Mayor of Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Coun David Gemmell, said: "Alongside creating a lasting tribute to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and recent genocides, the trees will also act as a symbol of hope for the future, one in which these atrocities will never be repeated."
