A169 Fylingdales crash: Road to Whitby still closed after HGV leaves road and ends up in stream

The A169 remains closed near RAF Fylingdales several hours after a lorry left the road and landed in a stream.

The crash occurred in the early hours of the morning but the road has been closed all day for recovery after the accident involving an articulated HGV on Eller Beck Bridge.

North Yorkshire Police have not released any details of the lorry driver’s condition, but did confirm no other vehicles were involved.

Local resident Danny McVay said: “The A169 Whitby to Pickering moor road is blocked due to an articulated lorry accident at Eller Beck Bridge near Fylingdales early warning station.

“The recovery truck is on scene but they are waiting for the arrival of a crane to assist in removing the truck from the stream below the bridge.

“Alternative routes via Whitby to Scarborough then to Pickering or Whitby to Egton Bridge then across Stape Moor to Pickering.

“A crane is on site but the lorry is proving difficult to move without causing further damage to the bridge; otherwise the road could be closed for several months for bridge repairs. It may be moved later this evening or tomorrow.”
