An investigation has been launched by British Transport Police (BTP) into the incident, one of two in the area on the same day, Tuesday, June 15.

Pc Amy Spencer said it was believed the stones were thrown from a nearby hill bank.

She said: "One of the stones thrown smashed the window's outer glass layer and embedded itself into inner layer, with the shards hitting a passenger. She later attended hospital for precautionary reasons.

Later that day, around 12.50pm, officers received further reports of stones being thrown at a train in the same area, although no further damage was caused.

Pc Spencer added: "These were extremely foolish and dangerous acts.

"Throwing stones at fast moving trains is an incredibly irresponsible thing to do."

Witnesses can contact BTP on 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
