Trains delayed again after Baildon landslip repaired

TRAIN services in part of West Yorkshire were delayed again on Thursday, despite the overnight repair of a landslip near Bradford which caused severe disruption yesterday.

Services between Bradford Forster Square and Ilkley were suspended in both directions throughout Wednesday after thunderstorms on Tuesday night resulted in flash flooding.

A small section of ballast – the stone underneath the rails – was washed away not far from Baildon station after the downpour.

Engineers worked throughout Wednesday to replace and repack the ballast, so services could resume on Thursday.

However, Northern Rail said an “operational incident” was delaying services by up to 30 minutes during the morning rush hour.

A spokesman for Northern Rail said: “Work being carried out by Network Rail to restore the route is progressing well and we are confident that train services between Bradford Forster Square and Ilkley will resume today.”

Travellers yesterday were having to take a replacement bus between Shipley and Guiseley to connect with trains.

The extreme weather, which saw motorists in London forced to abandon their cars by rising floodwaters, marked an end to sunny weather that saw temperatures in Yorkshire soar to above 26 degrees.
